Austin Mahone Bravely Opens Up About His Father’s Suicide

Everyone who’s been a Mahomie from Day 1 knows how much Austin loves his mom, Michele, and understands the tremendous impact she’s had on his life. But in the early stages of his career, Austin seemed to remain quiet when it came to his dad.

Then, two years ago, during an interview with Teen Vogue, Austin revealed that he lost his dad to suicide when he was just a baby. “I look exactly like him,” said Austin. “It’s scary.” Next week, Austin will appear on the E! show Hollywood Medium, where it seems that clairvoyant medium Tyler Henry connects the two.

It was incredibly brave of Austin to open up about his father’s death, especially because there’s such a stigma attached to suicide. And since today is World Suicide Prevention Day, Austin’s appearance on the show couldn’t have come at a better time. Nearly 2/3 of people who die by suicide are depressed at the time of their deaths. Depression that is untreated, undiagnosed, or ineffectively treated, is the number one cause of suicide. So if you or someone you know is struggling, don’t be afraid to get help – and don’t feel alone in your pain.

Nearly one in 5 teens experiences depression, and stars like Demi Lovato, 5SOS’ Michael Clifford, and even Ellen DeGeneres have gone through it.  Your school has counselors who are trained to help, and there are also a ton of resources online. You can also call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, and it’s never, ever the answer. You are so beautiful, so loved, and you deserve a lifetime of joy and hapiness.
