EXCLUSIVE COVER STORY: #YSBnowGirlsOfSummer

Sofia, Brenna, Brec, Jenna, Lizzy & Riele share their stories.

For the past six weeks, the #YSBnowGirlsOfSummer have let you into their lives and revealed their personal journeys, both as performers and as people.

Sofia Wylie, Brec Bassinger, Riele Downs, Jenna Ortega, Lizzy Greene, and Brenna D’Amico are six of the most incredible young women we’ve ever met, and it’s been an honor to share their stories with you. Now, we’re going to share what we’ve learned from them.

Here are six ways to have your best summer (and best life) ever, according to Sofia, Brec, Riele, Jenna, Lizzy, and Brenna.

1. Be Confident

Throughout her life, Sofia Wylie was insecure about her hair. “When I was younger, I really, really hated it,” she says. “Once I started embracing my true self, that actually helped a lot of things in my life.”

Brenna D’Amico dealt with bullies when she began doing theatre. “Confidence is everything when it comes to this business and life in general,” she says. “If you love yourself, you’re going to get so far. And if you believe in yourself, that’s everything. If I had listened to those girls who bullied me, I wouldn’t be where I am right now.”

2. Give Back

Just this past week, both Lizzy Greene and Brec Bassinger visited hospitals and spent time with pediatric patients. “But you, under no means, have to be famous in order to make a difference,” says Lizzy.

And she herself is proof of that. Long before starring on Nicky, Ricky, Dicky, & Dawn, Lizzy launched her own fundraiser to benefit the ASPCA. “I raised $178. It was such a good feeling to give that to them and they were so grateful,” she says. “A little goes a long way.”

3. Don’t Let Social Media Define You

They each have millions of followers on social media, but Sofia, Brec, Riele, Jenna, Lizzy, and Brenna want you to know that it doesn’t define them – and it shouldn’t determine your worth either. “There’s a lot of pressure right now to have a certain amount of followers on Instagram,” says Brenna. “The amount of followers that you have doesn’t determine how kind you are and it doesn’t determine your personality and how beautiful you are.”

Lizzy says that even celebrities feel the pressure. “You’ll go into an audition and they’ll ask you how many followers you have,” she reveals. “You’re like, ‘But I’m so much more than followers.’ And everyone should know that.”

Riele agrees. “I’m the same person without the followers as I am with the followers,” she says. “What defines you is your personality, what’s in your heart, and how you treat others.”

4. Embrace Your Quirks & Be Yourself

We love what Sofia says about this. “Everyone’s always thinking that they want to be like another person,” she explains. “I think everyone should just be themselves because that’s what makes you, you. Beauty is not about looking like everyone else – it’s about being yourself, being unique, and embracing yourself. That’s what makes you beautiful.”

Both Jenna and Riele express similar sentiments. “There is no one else like you on this planet,” says Riele. “When people get to meet you, they would never have that unique experience of meeting you if you weren’t being who you are. So do you and just be you – because you are beautiful.”

5. Follow Your Dreams & Never Give Up

If you can dream it, you can do it. Never let rejection stop you. “You get a lot more ‘no’s’ than yes’s,’” says Jenna. “Sometimes I’ve been discouraged, but you’ve got to keep pushing through. If you truly love something, go for it because you are going to be so much happier in the future. If you work hard, and you’re kind to everyone, you will succeed. It takes time, but you’ll get there.”

And if you give up, you’ll regret it. “If you don’t pursue your dreams, there will always be a part of you that’s like, ‘I wish I would have done that’ or ‘I should have done that,’” says Riele. “It will always be unfulfilled if you don’t at least try. There’s this joy that you get when you’re succeeding in what you’re doing.”

If things are changing in your life, remember that it’s all going to be okay.  “You just have to be positive and go into it headfirst,” says Brec. “Never give up, follow your dreams, and just go for it. What’s the worst that can happen? If you shoot for the moon, you’ll at least land among the stars. So live very day like that.”

6. Always Remember: You’re So Beautiful Now

Not when you hit 1,000 Instagram followers. Not when you’re invited to that party – but right now. “You don’t need to be a size zero or a size 16 to be beautiful,” says Brenna. “You can be anything you want. And believing in yourself and trusting yourself is beautiful.”
