EXCLUSIVE COVER STORY: Asher Dov Angel

Part 1 of our exclusive photo shoot!

If YSBnow were a high school, and we got to pick our Homecoming King, it’d most definitely be Asher Dov Angel. And over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing all the reasons why.

In Part 1 of Asher’s exclusive cover story, he reveals how discovering his passion in Arizona led to international superstardom on Disney Channel’s hottest show, Andi Mack

“If your heart tells you to do it, go for it.”

Asher Dov Angel remembers the exact moment he knew he wanted to be an actor. It wasn’t after he hit 100,000 followers on Instagram, or when he saw the Hollywood sign; it was when he watched his first musical, Wicked, at Desert Stages Theatre in his hometown of Scottsdale, Arizona. “I was seven years old,” he smiles. “I was like, ‘Oh that’s cool! I love that!'”

As fate would have it, Desert Stages was holding auditions for another musical, Oliver, the following week. With his parents’ permission, Asher auditioned and won a role in the production. But what began as a hobby very quickly evolved into a professional career. “I started out doing local shows, and then I moved up to more challenging roles,” he remembers. “From there, I went into professional theatre and was doing three shows back-to-back. It was crazy!”

Things got even crazier when Asher headed to Los Angeles to audition for television roles. He quickly landed guest starring roles on Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn and Criminal Minds, but one particular script really resonated with Asher. At the time, the Disney Channel pilot was called Andiland. “I immediately knew that kids would be able to connect to the show because it’s real life,” he explains. “There are kids out there going through these problems.”

After five auditions, Asher’s dad called to tell him he’d won the role of Jonah Beck on what would become the hottest new show of 2017: Andi Mack. “I grew up watching Disney Channel and always dreamed of being on it,” smiles Asher. “It was the best day of my life.”

And ever since that day he saw Wicked back in Arizona, Asher’s never let anyone or anything stop him from following his dreams. “If your heart tells you to do it, go for it,” he shares. “Don’t be afraid. Put your mind to it, work hard, and you can make it. Anything is possible.”
