“Advocating for justice and voicing opposition to systemic racism shouldn’t be divisive.”
Ever since she made her Disney Channel debut as Nia on Raven’s Home, Navia Robinson has used her celebrity platform in order to impact change. Whether she’s participating in the Women’s March, or lobbying for climate change initiatives, Navia is passionate about important causes and speaks up for what she believes in. Most recently, she posted a portrait of George Floyd on Instagram, and shared some prolific words:
“This is George Floyd,” she wrote. “He was described by loved ones as a ‘gentle giant’ and advocated strongly against gun violence within his community. His life was unjustly and inhumanely taken from him…To help in his fight for justice please text FLOYD to 55156.”
Navia also thinks it’s devastating to see people turning Floyd’s death into a political issue. “Advocating for justice and voicing opposition to systemic racism shouldn’t be divisive,” she added. “Everyone should be against police brutality/murder and abuse of power. Such beliefs are beyond politics and political parties. When someone has wrongfully been murdered, it is a time to mourn and take action, not to play devil’s advocate. Instances like these should unite people, regardless of color and identity, against something that is inarguably cruel. Choosing to ignore the issues within our country that have contributed to the loss of George Floyd’s life is blatantly exercising your privilege in the wrong way.”
