Before there was High School Musical, Teen Beach Movie, Descendants or any of your other fave movie musicals, there was Grease. The film (based on a 1971 Broadway production of the same name) hit theatres 40 years ago, and viewers of generations old and new have been singing and hand jiving along ever since.
Whether you’ve never heard of Grease or know the soundtrack by heart, now is your chance to see it brought to life on stage. We were lucky enough to see Grease: The Musical in Toronto before the end of its run on July 15 and want to tell you all about it! Here are 5 reasons why you should see it, too.
1. Janel Parrish stars as Sandy
You probably know Janel from Pretty Little Liars, but now you can fall in love with her as Sandy Dumbrowski! Though Janel may not look like the original blonde haired, blue eyed character, she totally rocks the stage by putting her own unique twist on the iconic role and making it her own.
2. It’s at the beautiful Winter Garden Theatre
If you want to visit an enchanted magical forest in Downtown Toronto, the Winter Garden Theatre is the spot to go. With stunning murals and literal leaves sprouting from the ceiling, stepping into the venue is like entering a real life fairy tale. What better place to get your Grease on?!
3. Guest Teen Angels
In addition to the fabulous regular cast, Grease: The Musical Toronto is welcoming special guests to play the role of Teen Angel for a limited time. Stars like Dancing With The Stars’ Mark Ballas and Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child have already graced the stage, with Big Time Rush’s Logan Henderson and Drake and Josh’s Drake Bell yet to come! Learn more at greaseonstage.com.
We were lucky enough to chat with Michelle after her first show. Check it out here!
4. It’s more than just a show
Before the curtain rises and after it falls, there are tons of fun activities to partake in. In the lobbies, audience members can enjoy photobooths, games, meet and greets with the cast and more. Whether you come for the musical, the bean bag toss or to score a selfie with a Teen Angel, you won’t leave disappointed!
5. It’s the Grease we know and love
This Grease is an awesome balance of the ‘70s classic our parents fell in love with and an updated version with the modern twists it needs to work in 2018. With strong female characters like Sandy and Rizzo, epic numbers like Grease Lighting and tons of family fun, Grease: The Musical Toronto is a guaranteed great time!
