“Changing my last name doesn’t change the fact that my BLOOD is half Chinese.”
Every week, actress Chloe Bennet kicks butt as Daisy Johnson on Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. In the past, the Chinese-American actress has opened up about changing her professional last name from Wang to Bennet in order to get more roles. “The first audition I went on after changing my name, I got booked,” she said. “That’s a pretty clear little snippet of how Hollywood works.”
So yesterday, when an Instagram troll criticized Chloe for changing her name, she delivered this amazing response:
changing my last name doesn’t change the fact that my BLOOD is half Chinese, that I lived in china, speak mandarin, or that I was culturally raised both American and Chinese. It means I had to pay my rent, and hollywood is racist and wouldn’t cast me with a last name that made them uncomfortable. I’m doing everything I can, with the platform I have, to make sure no one has to change their name again, just so they can get work.
We love how one of the fiercest characters on TV is fighting in real life, too – for representation and equality in the media.
You can watch Chloe on “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” every Friday night on ABC.
