Talia Jackson should have been having the best week ever. The multi-talented actress and singer landed her first starring role in Family Reunion, which premiered on Netflix last Wednesday. And while the show garnered rave reviews from the LA Times and currently sits in the streaming service’s popular new series section, Talia faced a barrage of criticism on social media from viewers who didn’t like her character’s wig.
Yesterday, Talia addressed the criticism in a poignant Instagram post, stating:
“Trust me, I’m not a fan of the wig either, it was itchy and uncomfortable. We actually straightened my own hair and did not use a wig on the first episode we shot, which was episode 107. But my hair got damaged badly and I lost a lot of my curl pattern. So in order to save my curls and repair the damage we had to use a wig.”
She also explained how hair plays an important role in her character’s storyline [SPOILER ALERT AHEAD]
“The show’s creator @themegadiva wanted Jade to be on a journey from Seattle where she did not embrace her natural hair, to Columbus GA where she learns to love her natural God given beauty. I encourage all of you to especially watch Episode 108 where it explains the transformation of Jade when I enter a beauty pageant.”
We started watching Family Reunion last night and loved seeing Talia shine onscreen as Jade. But her post also shows how much she shines offscreen – as herself.
