Meghan Trainor has always been a figure of empowerment in the music industry. From iconic songs like All About That Bass to No Excuses, Meghan’s musical career is full of important messages. Now, the 24 year old singer is opening up about her battle with anxiety and depression. “I fell into a crazy, deep hole of depression and anxiety,” Meghan says to Dan Wootten in an interview for his podcast. Listen here.
“When I had an episode it would last for three days,” Meghan reveals. ““Eventually I was going to doctors, psychologists and therapists and I was like, ‘My back feels like someone has a flame to it, I’m not sure if I’m going crazy.”
“I went to the emergency room one night, because I thought I was allergic to what I ate. My throat was closing and I was having trouble breathing,” she shares. But what Meghan thought was just a food disagreeing with her was actually a “full blown panic attack.” She learned from that experience saying, “What I learned is people have it and don’t talk about it.”
Meghan wants her fans to know that battling anxiety and depression is not your fault, it’s not something to be embarrassed about, and you can ask for help. “You feel like there’s something wrong with you and you’re embarrassed to talk about it.” Once Meghan began research on her condition, she was able to take back some control. Meghan began working with a therapist and after time, what started as 24 hours a day of anxiety became just one hour.
Meghan’s current fiancee, “Spy Kids” star Daryl Sabara was a huge source of support for her. He helped her get on track with a healthy diet and get inspired to work out, which is a huge factor into our mental wellness. Sometimes just 30 minutes a day can curb depression and anxiety. Her health is her focus, as it should be for everyone, and she’s really kickstarted a healthy lifestyle. “I take a lot of vitamins — I love Bulletproof vitamins. They’ve even got stuff for your eyes. I drank a gallon of water a day, sometimes more, for months now.”
“I eat really clean, no sugar and low-carb as much as I can.” Meghan says before she would eat Thai food and pizza on tour and that factored into her mental health as well as her physical health.
Meghan’s journey to find her best self through wellness is super inspiring and something we can all learn from. Health isn’t just about your body, it’s largely about your mind too, and taking care of both is the only way to truly be your best self!
