We never knew Selena was going through this. Luckily, her BFF was at her side.
Through her art, music, interviews, and social media shares, it feels like we know quite a bit about Selena Gomez. She grew up in front of us on TV, and has made it part of her mission to really open up with her fans about the realities of fame. But now, the star revealed that there’s more behind-the-scenes to her lupus health struggles than we could ever realize. Over this summer, she received a kidney transplant surgery, and has one of her best friends, “Secret Life” and “Bring It On: All or Nothing” actress Francia Raisa to thank for her healthy new kidney.
“I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health,” Selena posted on her Instagram along with a mini gallery of photos. “I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery.”
Selena also shared the sweetest message for Francia, who made the biggest gesture in her friend’s recovery.
“Finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me,” Selena wrote. “I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made. For more information regarding Lupus please go to the Lupus Research Alliance website: www.lupusresearch.org/ -by grace through faith.”
Included in Selena’s photo album is a beautiful image of Francia and Selena laying side-by-side holding hands in their hospital beds. This is true love and friendship, you guys.
Selena also included two post-surgery photos that reveal her scars, showing us not only how far she has come, but how brave she is in revealing this illness.
YSBnow saw Selena at her Coach House event in NYC yesterday, and she was as radiant, beautiful, and kind to her fans as ever. She is queen of both putting on a brave face AND being vulnerable and opening up to others when it matters.
Selena’s story should also be a reminder to always act as kindly as possible to others, as you never know what secret struggles they may be dealing with.
We wish all the best to Selena in her further recovery, and look forward to seeing further updates on her journey that she plans to share.
