Lupita Nyong’o Is Writing a Children’s Book About Embracing Your Beauty

The story is about a young girl who is uncomfortable with her dark skin, but discovers her own true beauty.

Let us count the ways we love Lupita Nyong’o. Not only is the esteemed actress inspiring others through her film roles, but now she will be making an impact on younger generations through her upcoming new children’s book that is all about learning to love the unique beauty of your skin tone.

“I am pleased to reveal that I have written a children’s book! It’s called ‘Sulwe’!” Lupita announced on her Instagram. “Sulwe is a dark skinned girl who goes on a starry-eyed adventure, and awakens with a reimagined sense of beauty. She encounters lessons that we learn as children and spend our lives unlearning. This is a story for little ones, but no matter the age I hope it serves as an inspiration for everyone to walk with joy in their own skin. Coming January 2019!!”

Unfortunately, we have to wait an entire year to learn the magic of this story. But in a followup statement, Lupita explained that she personally relates to the story her character goes through.

“As a child, much like Sulwe, I was teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin,” she shared. “It made me feel unbeautiful, unaccepted, and impacted my confidence. It is painful to see that the preference for light skin prevails. My goal in writing Sulwe is to provide young children with a path towards seeing their own beauty, regardless of what society tells them.”

We love this message, Lupita! And we can’t wait to read it.
