BREAKING NEWS: Freeform’s “The Fosters” Is Getting a Spinoff!

The series as we know it is over, but don’t lose hope just yet

If you’re a fan of the Freeform series The Fosters, you know the show is all about unexpected challenges, and life’s ups and downs. And so coincidentally, in sharing the latest updates about the TV show, we have both good news and bad news.

We’ll start with the sad part: Unfortunately, the network has announced that The Fosters won’t be coming back for another season. The last of the episodes will air in Summer 2018, along with a three-part special edition series. We hope that all of this advance notice will mean the show gets the finale it deserves, especially since we’ve been longtime supporters since the show started in back in 2013.
But we promised good news, too: Maia Mitchell and Cierra Ramirez (who play Callie and Mariana) have signed on to a spinoff series and reprise their beloved roles. According to Variety, there will be a time jump, so we will see the girls moving on from high school. Their moms, Stef and Lena (played by Teri Polo and Sherri Saum), are also set to be part of this still-unnamed series.
There are a LOT of show details we’re going to need filled in before The Fosters wraps and its spinoff kicks off. But we expect a lot from the series continuation, especially since everyone involved with the show knows how important the topics addressed in the series are to viewers.
“It’s been the privilege of our lives to get to shepherd this beautiful family through five seasons of love, laughter, heartbreak, tribulation, and triumph — and message to the world that DNA doesn’t make a family, love does. All while allowing us to explore some of the most pressing social issues of our era,” the show’s executive producers Joanna Johnson, Bradley Bredeweg, and Peter Paige said in a statement. “Now that the kids are growing up, it’s time to take them out into the world, to see them make their way into adulthood, continuing their search for identity and love, and the pursuit of their dreams and purpose in this ever changing world.”
Keep in mind that we’re also getting a Pretty Little Liars spinoff coming soon to Freeform, after that fan-favorite show recently wrapped. So it looks like all of our faves are going in new directions!
