“I am so proud of where I come from”
Shadowhunters has been renewed for a second season on Freeform, starring Latina actress Emeraude Toubia. Toubia recently spoke about what her character means to her, and what an impact being a successful Latina actress has on both her fans and the world.
“I am so proud of where I come from,” she told Latina.com. “My mom is Mexican, my dad is Lebanese, and I’m American, and I think that’s what being an American is…this show, this cast and myself are what…is an American.”
She went on to talk about how her fans often tell her that they “never related to someone on screen” before her, and how those letters and messages have made her strive to be a better role model and to recognize her impact in Hollywood.
Toubia plays a role model on-screen as well. “Isabelle is strong, powerful,” she said about her character. “She’s beauty, brains and can punch you in the face. I think she’s going to be a great role model for a lot of young girls that want to look up to someone on TV.” She also pointed out that Isabel is “not scared of being intelligent” and is “willing to do anything for her family.”
Sounds like someone else we know. Both Toubia and her character are strong, powerful Latina women who are making strides both for representation and as role models!
