It’s Official: Wonder Woman Is Queer!

DC Comics writer Greg Rucka confirms the news in an interview

You heard right! Our favorite Amazonian super heroine, Wonder Woman has joined the growing LGBT group in the comic world. Writer Greg Rucka confirmed it, stating the decision was only logical because she’s from Themyscira – an island inhabited solely by women. Rucka said, “It’s supposed to be paradise. You’re supposed to be able to live happily. You’re supposed to be able to have a fulfilling, romantic relationship.”

Representation is so important in the media we consume and we’re excited to see such an iconic character represent the LGBT community. “This is not a desire exclusive to the queer reader, but one felt deeply by all manner of marginalized audiences, from female to Black, Asian to Latino, Muslin, disabled, gender nonbinary, and every intersection you can imagine,” said Rucka.

While Wonder Woman is new to the LGBT circle, she’s certainly not the first out character. Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, is bisexual – and the first openly transgender character, Alysia, was introduced in a Batgirl comic! Also in this group are Green Lantern and Mystique from the X-Men franchise.

We can’t wait to see Gail Gadot bring the iconic character to life in Wonder Woman, which hits movie theaters on June 2, 2017!
