WCW: See Why Tina From “Bob’s Burgers” Is Our Shero

The oldest Belcher child is our favorite animated character on television

By Emily J.

I’ve always hated South Park. Don’t get me wrong, I really wanted to like it.  I really wanted to. I wanted to laugh at Cartman’s stupid decisions and whenever Kenny died. Every one of my friends loved the show, why couldn’t I? I sat and watched a handful of episodes. However, as soon as the credits rolled, I felt relieved that the show was over. It was exhausting to watch and I never found any of the jokes funny, so I stopped watching it.

I came home from work one day and saw my roommate, sprawled out on the couch, eating chips, and watching Bob’s Burgers. She perked her head up and waved me over.

“Come watch it, another episode is on next.”

I was a little hesitant but I wanted my roommate to think I was cool and “with it.” So, I put my bag down,  joined her on the couch and prepared to fake laugh.

But what I saw next, I wasn’t expecting in the slightest.

Bob’s Burgers follows the ordinary life of Bob and Linda Belcher and their three kids: Tina, Gene, and Louise. However, instead of pushing their daughters to the side to give the “manly antics” of Gene and Bob more air (think of American Dad and the like), the writers have worked hard to ensure that each character has their story, like awkward and deadpanned teenager, Tina.

Tina is the embodiment of the typical hypersexual teen in mainstream comedy. She is a strong independent woman who knows who she is and doesn’t apologize for it. In the episode “Presto Tina-O,” her crush, Jimmy Pesto Jr, fires her from being his magician’s assistant for the upcoming school’s talent show. Instead of crying in a corner and refusing to come out of her bedroom, Tina decides she’s going to present her own magic show and prove Jimmy Jr wrong.

With her awkwardness and her monotone voice, she is a walking punchline. However, her humor comes from her self-confidence and her straight-faced delivery.  She might be a weird human being, but she owns it like the shining star she is. Plus, being weird is so much better than being normal.

Stay beautiful, Tina. You might not be a typical hero but you’re our hero.

You can watch Bob’s Burgers Seasons 1-4 on Netflix. Its current season is now streaming on Hulu.
