Who would’ve thought Harry Potter could be a comedy? Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience – A Parody by Dan and Jeff proves it totally can be! The show, playing at the CAA Theatre in Toronto until July 22, condenses all seven of the iconic JK Rowling books into a fun-packed 75 minute theatre experience.
We were lucky enough to see Potted Potter this week with James Percy and Brendan Murphy in the leading roles. Here are three reasons why you should see it, too.
1. It’s a guaranteed good time for Harry Potter fans
If you’re a Potterhead, you can be assured that this parody play will serve the story you know and love well. They do a great job of poking fun at the main characters and their flaws without being mean. There are over 300 characters in the larger than life world of Harry Potter, but Potted Potter hilariously reduces the important ones to a single defining characteristic. With tons of hidden Easter eggs for die-hard fans to appreciate, the show makes something funny and simple out of a complex series.
2. You don’t have to be a Potterhead to appreciate it
Even if you’re just a casual Harry Potter viewer and have never read the books, you’ll have a good time at The Unauthorized Harry Experience. The performance is short and sweet and also super intimate – performed by a two-man cast in a 700 people theatre. The chemistry between the two leads, who appear to be having a genuinely great time together, is enough to make a great show. The wizard aside, it’s a silly, family-friendly production with tons of props, crazy costumes and some awesome music!
3. You’re more than just an audience member
At Potted Potter, you get to be part of the show too! The two-man cast regularly engage the crowd, seem to improvise a lot of jokes based on the audience and even let a few lucky people join them on stage. If you attend, you get a scroll program of your very own, can buy butter beer at the bar and even get to play a real-life game of Quidditch!
Written and created by two-time Olivier Award-nominated actors Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner, Potted Potter surely deserved its 2012 Olivier Award nomination for Best Entertainment & Family Show.
