Sofia Wylie, Olivia Rodrigo, & more of our faves are new Wildcats!
It has been almost 15 years (!!!) since the first “High School Musical” movie aired on Disney Channel, but it was and instant and enduring classic. Now, the beloved DCOM franchise is getting a modern makeover: in the form of a streaming series for the soon-to-launch service, Disney+. That’s right: get ready for “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.”
The 10-episode series is going to pick up where it all began: East High. The show will follow a group of students as they prepare for opening night of their own school’s production of “High School Musical.”
The show is set to include tons of brand-new songs (that we already KNOW we’ll have stuck in our heads forever) plus acoustic “rehearsal-room” reinterpretations of songs from the original “High School Musical” soundtrack.
To make things even more exciting, Disney Channel has just revealed the entire cast, and released the first full cast photo!
Olivia Rodrigo (from Disney’s “Bizaardvark”) is set to play Nini, who’s fresh off a summer at theater camp and ready to take on the school musical. And she’s also Ricky’s ex, who’s inspiring him to get into the spotlight himself.
Sofia Wylie (from Disney’s “Andi Mack”) will be playing the ambitious performer Gina, who is NOT pleased with being cast as the school musical’s understudy. We can’t wait to see how that drama plays out!
Then there is Matt Cornett (from Nickelodeon’s “Bella and the Bulldogs”), who will play E.J., Nini’s overachieving new love interest with a lot to prove. He’s aiming for a lead role in the school’s production, and he isn’t going to let anyone take his spot easily.
The cast also includes Kate Reinders (“Modern Family,” and Broadway’s “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical”), Dara Renee’ (“Freaky Friday”), Julia Lester (“Mom”), Frankie Rodriguez (“Modern Family”), Larry Saperstein (“Fan Girl”), and Mark St. Cyr (“Doomsday”).
We can’t wait to get to know this great cast in the new series.
Disney+ is set to launch in late 2019, and will feature tons of Disney’s great content to stream. “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” has just started production, and we’ll keep you posted on when it is set to make its highly-anticipated premiere.
