EXCLUSIVE COVER STORY: Ricky Garcia

“Be comfortable in your own skin – no one can be you, but you”

If you’re in the same room as Ricky Garcia, it’s impossible not to be happy. So it comes as no surprise when he says that happiness is what drives him – not just in his daily life, but also in his career. “Music is what makes me happy,” he says. “I listen to music and it makes me happy. I sing and that makes me even happier. The most important thing to me is being happy and doing what you love.”

Ricky also stresses how important it is to stay true to who you are, especially when times get tough. “In high school and in everyday life, you walk around and people look at you and expect you to be a certain way,” he says. “But that’s not how you should look at yourself.”

And he hasn’t let haters steal his happiness. “There are always going to be people who say the stupidest things on Instagram or Twitter,” he says. “You can’t think about what other people think of you – that just makes you more self-conscious. And you shouldn’t be self-conscious about the way you look or talk or speak. You should be yourself and you shouldn’t be afraid of what people think.”

Ricky and his band, Forever In Your Mind, are proof that dreams come true when you work hard, stay humble, and never stop believing in yourself. While many of their industry peers were busy focusing on Twitter followers and YouTube views, FIYM spent the past three years building a fan base the old-fashioned way: playing hundreds of concerts, rehearsing for hours on end, and working to perfect their stunning harmonies.

It paid off this past October, when the trio got signed to Hollywood Records, the same label that launched Selena Gomez and the Jonas Brothers. Yesterday, Ricky, Liam and Emery released their new EP, which soared to the top 20 on iTunes in multiple countries.

And on Monday, the boys won’t just be celebrating the 4th of July – they’ll be making their network television debut when they perform “Hurricane” on Good Morning America.  “It’s so easy to quit and just give up,” says Ricky. “There’s always going to be setbacks and people telling you, you can’t do this or you can never achieve this. But if you truly believe in what you want to do, there’s no holding you back.”
