EXCLUSIVE #YSBnowGirlsOfSummer COVER STORY: Sofia Wylie

“Beauty is not about looking like everyone else – it’s about being unique and embracing yourself”

Sofia Wylie may star as the outspoken Buffy on television’s hottest new show, Andi Mack, but in real life, the Arizona native says she used to be totally shy. “I didn’t want to talk to anybody that I didn’t know well,” she reveals. “I would always hide behind my mom.”

However, things began to change when Sofia enrolled in classes at a local dance studio. What started as a hobby quickly evolved into a passion, and soon enough, Sofia found herself traveling to Los Angeles for professional dance auditions and shoots. Then, she decided that she wanted to try acting, too. “I was really, really scared at first, but the more I did it, the more I had fun,” she says.

About a year ago, Sofia received a script for a new Disney Channel series: Andi Mack. “I really, really loved it,” says Sofia. “And I just thought Buffy was so confident. I think that’s something that everyone struggles with is confidence.” Even Sofia.

“When I was younger I really, really hated my hair,” she shares. “All of my friends had straight hair and I loved their hair.” She began straightening her hair with a flat iron – at first just for special occasions, and eventually, every day.

“I couldn’t really wear it natural anymore, so I had to re-straighten it all the time and it was just this horrible cycle that really, really ruined my hair. That was a big point in my life where I was like, ‘I can’t do this to myself anymore.’”

And when Sofia started loving the qualities she’d previously considered imperfections, her entire life changed. “Once I started embracing my true self, that actually helped a lot of things in my life,” she shares.

“I think the things that make you unique and make you yourself are what you think are your imperfections. But it’s actually probably something that people love about you. Everyone’s always thinking that they want to be like another person. I think everyone should just be themselves because that’s what makes you, you. Beauty is not about looking like everyone else – it’s about being yourself, being unique, and embracing yourself. That’s what makes you beautiful.”
