Laurie Hernandez Delivers An Inspiring DWTS Performance After Losing Her Grandmother

This gymnast is a superstar!

Monday’s “Dancing With the Stars” episode was especially emotional for Olympic gold medalist Laurie Hernandez who, sadly, lost her grandmother last week.

In a pre-taped video package shown before her foxtrot with partner Val Chmerkovskiy, Laurie talked about her grandmother, Brunilda, who had supported her big dreams to be a gymnast since she was young. “I am extremely close to my grandma. Growing up she would always do my hair,” said Laurie. “She was always the one who would make me chocolate milk or rice when I came home.”

After showing footage of Laurie visiting her in an assisted living home and a clip where she talked about her grandmother’s struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease, it was announced that Brunilda passed away a day after that interview was shot.

In a stunning display of courage, Laurie delivered an emotionally gripping performance to Tori Kelly’s “Hollow” in her grandmother’s honour. The judges were blown away, scoring her a perfect 30 out of 30. “You looked like you were flying, guided by an angel,” said judge Bruno Tonioli. Laurie’s determination and love for her family was evident to the judges, the audience and everyone watching at home. She broke into tears after her last dance step, but we are so proud of and inspired by the strength she demonstrated during the routine.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Laurie and her family. Thank you, Laurie, for showing us that beautiful things can happen when you channel your pain into passion. We love you!
