“There’s no wrong way to be a woman”
Caption 1 A little while back, Secret – a women’s deodorant company – released this “Ladies Room” commercial as part of their #StressTest campaign:
The advertisement, now with over 6 million views on YouTube, is about a trans woman building up the courage to exit a women’s bathroom stall after strangers walk in. “Stress test #8260: Dana finds courage to show there’s no wrong way to be a woman,” reads its tagline.
The trans community is too often subject to violence – in fact, according to the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, 19% of surveyed trans people have reportedly suffered domestic abuse because of their gender nonconformity. In this way, in fear of being assaulted or made to feel unwelcome, it is almost too real that Dana would be nervous. In a lovely turn of events, however, when she walks out, you can hear the other women complimenting Dana saying “great dress” and “it’s really cute!”
Karis Wilde, the actress who played Dana in the commercial, talked to Queerty about her experience using public restrooms in real life: “I always have moments of insecurity but I have conditioned myself to act unbothered. While shooting, I allowed myself to feel vulnerable. It terrified me how much I’ve stored all those emotions; I almost cried in the middle of taping.”
We are so proud of Secret for spreading a loving message and championing such a beautiful community!
