Watch Kesha Open Up About Bullying and LGBTQ Rights

“Love is love. Period.”

by Danielle Sinay

Kesha has a message for the LGBTQ Community: “I’m in the fight with you.”

In a video for Vevo’s Why I Vote Campaign, Kesha vulnerably opened up about getting bullied and the importance of equality, especially for those who identify as LGBTQ.

“I never, ever, since the moment I was born, never felt like I fit in. Pretty much anywhere. I just remembered being bullied, about what I wore, the music I liked,” she said.

The constant bullying let her to believe she wasn’t “worthy of love,” and when she began to question her sexuality, was terrified. “I was just so scared, what if I am gay? What does that mean? I already get bullied so much, if I’m gay on top of this? Like, how could it even get worse?”

Fortunately, Kesha was able to turn to her mom for support, who always taught her that “every single person is equal. So I’ve always just known that no matter your skin color is, what race you are, what socio-economic background you come from, who you love, we’re all equal.” And Kesha took her mom’s wisdom to heart.

“I can never imagine punishing someone for loving a member with whatever sex, or someone with whatever skin color,” she continued. “Love is love. Period.”

We love that Kesha is using her voice to stand up for what she believes in, and hopefully inspiring others to do the same. Because as she said, “it is up to you,” and it is! Never underestimate the power of your voice, because we promise, we’re listening. (And don’t forget, if you’re 18, make sure you’re registered to vote!)
